New York police say 1 dead, 5 injured in deadly crash involving vehicles

NEW YORK — New York City police said Tuesday that a fatal crash involving two vehicles on West 56th Street killed at least five people and injured six others.

The vehicles were traveling eastbound on West 57th Street when they collided with another vehicle, police said in a statement.

Officers from the New York City Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to render aid to the injured occupants of the first vehicle, which had been stopped at a traffic light.

Police later found the second vehicle, a white Ford Transit van, partially submerged in water near the intersection of 57th and West 56, the statement said.

Police said the vehicles were not wearing life jackets.

The victims were identified as Anthony Gonzalez, 47, of the Bronx; and Jorge Ortiz, 52, of Queens.

A spokesman for the Queens County coroner said the victims died at a hospital.

A third person, a man, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
